Just before the holidays, Deb and I had the heartbreaking task of putting our beloved King Charles Cavalier, Emma, to sleep.
As much as we mourn her loss, we know full well that she had a great life. Emma was the subject of several posts on this blog and in May 2005, I shared the story of how Emma became a fixture here at TMG.
When we adopted Emma, I assumed she would stay at home like any normal dog - but she had other ideas. We got her on a Saturday and on the following Monday I went to work and left her home. At lunch I went home to check on her and, of course, she was panicky at being left alone. So I took her to the office for the afternoon. This exercise repeated itself on Tuesday. And on Wednesday morning, when I reached for my briefcase, she went for her leash. At that moment she became a working dog.
I realize this is not something anyone can do. As the owner of my own business, however, it is a privilege I greatly value. Emma’s presence in the office is a joy for me and a benefit to my firm.
For nearly 14 years she served with distinction as the “Senior Stress Reducer” in our office. She was truly the perfect employee - in her world a 10 hour day was great and a 12 hour day was even better (so long as she could sleep 90 percent of the time).
Before adopting Emma, Deb and I would certainly have looked askance at someone who treated a dog like a child. It didn’t take long for Emma to enlighten us.
It was Harry Truman who said if you want a friend in Washington, you should get a dog. Emma was a great friend, and we will miss her terribly.
From all of us here at TMG, we wish you Happy Holidays and a safe and pleasant New Year! We’re taking some time off to celebrate - check back for a new post on Monday, January 5th.
